Kerala 12 years old dies after getting contracted to Nipah Virus after eating Rambutan fruit in Kozhikode District of Kerala. Two health workers have been identified who are found symptomatic. In 2018 in Kerala 18+ people got infected and 17 people died and in 2019 one person died due to Nipah Virus infection. 20 High Risk contacts have been identified said Kerala Health Minister.
What is Nipah Virus?
The WHO defines the Nipah virus as zoonotic which refers to transmission from animals to humans. However, this virus can also be spread between people or from contaminated food.
Those who contract the virus may be asymptomatic but in worse cases, may suffer serious respiratory illness or a fatal inflammation of the brain, WHO says. Nipah virus first was detected in Malaysia where it was detected in the year 1999. Then detected in West Bengal and Later Kerala. Mortality of this virus is 40-75%. Symptoms are fever, headache and Sore throat.
